Expats warned: Do not bounce cheques in Dubai

British expatriates living in Dubai may wish to take care to have sufficient funds in their accounts to avoid bouncing cheques.
Up to a quarter of all the cheques written are bouncing and the punishment for not paying bills can be severe, a report in the Times reveals.
The paper noted payment by cheque is commonplace thanks to the difficulty of running credit checks on foreign workers.
Based on estimates drawn from local banks, Ghanem Nuseibeh, senior analyst at consultancy Political Capital, told the paper as many as one in four are not clearing.
British expatriates are still drawn to Dubai and other states within the United Arab Emirates thanks to the region's willingness to employ foreign immigrants.
A range of different types of work are available in the region. For example, World Health Organization statistics cited by Batool al-Mohandis, head of school for nursing and midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain, suggest that 98 per cent of nurses in Kuwait are expatriates.
