Expatriate workers living in Bahrain have secured three of the top ten places in a list of the Gulf state's most powerful people.

Released by local publication Arabian Business, the list was compiled over three months and aimed to determine "the most influential 50 people on the island", said researchers.

Both expats and those native to Bahrain were considered for the poll. The only condition candidates had to fulfil was that they live full-time in the emirate.

The highest ranking expat to make the list was investment banker Nemir Kirdar. In at number five, Iraq-born Mr Kirdar is the founder of high-net banking firm Investcorp.

Former British ambassador to Bahrain Steve Harrison was in ninth place as an executive director of the country's Economic Development Board.

Not all of those who made the list were confined to the boardroom. Czech national Milan Macala, the head coach of Bahrain's national football team, took tenth place.

Last month saw Arabian Business publish its Saudi Arabia rich list, placing Prince Alwaleed bin Talil at number one with an estimated fortune of $3.18 billion, according to the publication.
