Expats economising medical insurance market

14/12/09 13:00

Expats are calling on their medical insurance providers to deliver cost savings during this time of economic constraint, according to the Association of International Medical Insurance Providers (AIMIP).

Speaking to the Telegraph, Carl Carter, chairman of the organisation, said providers are responding to these requests with new deals and incentives that present some lucrative opportunities for expat medical insurance customers willing to shop around.

"Everyone is using the credit crunch and the state of the economy to batten down the hatches and save costs," he explained, adding that tailor-made policies are also becoming increasingly popular.

However, the paper reminded expat medical insurance customers that they should consider other aspects of cover besides cost, with consumer protection and portability identified as key concerns.

Shelter Offshore responded to the report by urging expats to research medical insurance policies carefully to ensure they are adequately protected. Embassies may also be able to provide information about local healthcare provision, the site noted.
