Expats 'could retire in the UK for longer lives'

Advances in medical science and standards of living mean that UK pensioners are now living longer and healthier lives, says new research.

Released by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the report found that the average British life expectancy is increasing by more than five hours a day.

The Rejuvenating Ageing research suggested that if the trend continues, older people will be free to contribute more to society, offsetting some of the problems associated with an ageing population.

Older persons' charities Age Concern and Help the Aged warned that the UK's National Health Service and medical research will have to "move quickly" to reflect the nation's changing needs, expatriate retirees may be interested to hear.

A spokesperson for the organisations said the current health system "was designed for a bygone age and it hasn't kept pace with the changing demographic".

He added that news pensioners are leading healthier lives should be welcomed: "It should be something positive and something we can celebrate and take best advantage of, but we just have to change our institutions and our structures to reflect the reality."
