Expatriates should beware increasing skin cancer risk, say experts

Faced with hot summer weather Brits should take care to protect themselves against the danger of contracting skin cancer, an expert has warned.

Expatriates often move abroad to enjoy warmer climates, but according to new statistics from charity Cancer Research UK, more people than ever are suffering from cases of malignant melanoma.

According to the British Association of Dermatologists' spokesperson Rebecca Freeman, many people "are unsure about their own skin type and the levels of protection needed for them as individuals".

Ms Freeman explained that dermatologists categorise people's skin into six separate types.

"Your skin type cannot be changed and does not vary according to how tanned you are – it is genetic," she advised.

As well as the general sun safety messages, it's also important to check your skin every month and report any changes to your GP.

Would-be expatriates considering a move to a warmer country should look at their existing health insurance policy and establish what level of cover they might need.ADNFCR-1788-ID-19196667-ADNFCR
