'Expatriates in the UAE 'should support their local football club'
21/05/09 12:52
The head of the newly-formed United Arab Emirates Football League (UFL) has called on expatriates to get behind their local football team and support etisalat Pro League matches, Gulf news has reported.
As the season draws to an end there is a title battle (between Al Ahli and Al Jazira), a Champions League qualification match and a relegation scrap (between Sharjah and Al Shaab), says UFL chief executive officer Romy Gai.
"We plan to bring in more crowds to the ground and our focus will be on the large expatriate population based here in the UAE," Mr Gai added.
To attract more interest, the league will be broadcast in English on the radio and "we will be working on programmes and magazines on a regular basis to be telecast in English", he said.
Expatriates who crave their footy often turn to satellite or the internet to catch up with games from home.
