Expatriate workers preparing for a new life in the Netherlands may be pleased to hear local tourism officials promise a warm welcome.

According to the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, Dutch people are warm, laid-back and open to new cultures.

A spokesperson for the board said: "They enjoy speaking to visitors from different countries and often speak several languages making communication easier."

She added that foreign visitors would find much more than classic tulips and windmills to enjoy, with museums in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague all preparing to showcase new exhibitions and events.

Her comments follow the publication of new research from consumer specialist OnePoll naming Holland as the friendliest European destination. The country scored more than twice as many votes as nearest rival Greece.

France was voted the least welcoming nation in the poll of 3,000 British tourists.
