Expatriate health insurance 'is advised'

Any expatriate who is unsure about healthcare entitlement abroad may benefit from taking out international health insurance, an expert has said.
Rhiannon Davies, director of Shelter Offshore, said that while healthcare can be affordable in certain countries such a Cyprus and Turkey, it is worth considering expatriate medical insurance to ensure you are covered for "all care and treatment potentially necessary".
"It really is worth looking into health insurance if you are unsure about the level of care you will be entitled to in your preferred destination of choice," she explained.
In June 2008, restrictions were announced on expats' right to state healthcare provision. These restrictions were reportedly aimed primarily at non-working expats below pension age.
Following these restrictions, the British Embassy in Madrid advised individuals affected to buy private medical insurance.
Ms Davies warned: "If you move to live abroad and cut all ties with the UK, don't automatically assume you can always fall back on the good old NHS."
