Expatriate Insurance News: UAE focuses on expat workers' rights
15/06/10 13:31
Expatriates working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are benefiting from a number of initiatives aimed at improving employees' rights.
According to a report released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the country's Wage Protection System, which was set up to guarantee that workers would receive their full wages on time, is a model that could be implemented in other countries.
Expat employees could also see the advantages of the summer midday break, the regular inspection of workers' accommodation and the fines handed out to businesses that delay their staff wages.
The income protection scheme was established by the Ministry of Labour two years ago after the UAE was made the subject of media campaigns highlighting the conditions under which low-skilled labourers worked.
It is to be followed by a report into health and safety measures protecting expatriates at work, along with possible co-operation with the ministries of labour of India and the Philippines over expatriate contractual work.
