Expatriate Insurance News: Thousands of expats find work in Qatar
23/06/10 12:39
Some 64,000 expatriates were recruited into employment in Qatar during the first quarter of this year, the latest figures released by the country's Labour Ministry have revealed.
The ministry's report noted that the number of recruited expats accounted for less than half (49.4 per cent) of the workforce requested by businesses, the Gulf Times reported.
Some 16,204 applications for expat workforce recruitment were received by the Recruitment Department of the ministry, of which 5,560 were new applications and 10,635 asked to extend previous approvals. Almost all (97.8 per cent) of the extensions were granted.
Expatriate workers in Qatar also made 5,738 applications to bring their families into the country in the first three months of the year.
The most common complaint from workers in Qatar during the first quarter was about employers delaying salaries, with 3,875 separate complaints made to the Labour Ministry.
Other problems taken to the ministry were related to the denial of flight tickets, holiday allowance and end-of-service benefits, the Gulf Times reported last week.
