Expatriate Insurance News: Qatar sees launch of cheapest mobile 'to target expat population'
27/04/10 17:35
The world's cheapest mobile device has become available in Qatar in order to target the region's expatriate population, The National has reported.
Launched by Vodafone, the mobile costs 59 rials (£10.50) and is expected to be popular among the foreign workforce.
The handset was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in February and is designed to be sold through the provider's African business, focusing on consumers in Ghana and Tanzania where spending on phones is low.
Vodafone's announcement follows research which suggests Qatar and Saudi Arabia are driving job creation in the Gulf, which is attracting more expatriates to find work and settle in the region.
The number of expatriate workers in Qatar increased by 2.2 per cent in the final quarter of 2009, recruitment website Gulftalent.com found. This has been fuelled in part by the country's exploitation of its gas resources, which are the third largest in the world.
