Expatriate Insurance News: Palm oil workers 'get extended permit'

Expatriates employed in the Malaysian palm oil plantation industry for more than five years will be offered a permit renewal to help tackle the country's labour shortage.
Foreign workers will be allowed to have their permits extended for another five years, the Malaysia Star reported.
Deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reportedly said that the government was concerned about a depleting workforce in the palm oil sector.
"The government is aware that if drastic early measures are not taken, it would jeopardise the productivity and competitiveness of this sub-sector," he said in a statement.
The minister added that the sector was still one of the most labour-intensive in the country and a lack of participation among locals has allowed many expatriates to be employed.
The move comes after the government put the production of palm oil on the agenda as one of the key national economic development areas to be given encouragement under the tenth Malaysia plan, due to be unveiled on June 10th, Bernama reported.
