Expatriate Insurance News: Local cuisine 'is highlight of travelling overseas'

The highlight of living overseas as an expatriate or taking a trip to a new place is to try the local cuisine, according to a tourist board.

Lillian Panayi of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation said expats or visitors coming to the island would be making a big mistake if they did not drive into the countryside to sample the fare of small villages.

"The beauty of Cyprus is that you'll actually eat food that is in season, so you're actually tasting it at its freshest," she noted, adding that one of the country's must-try dishes is kleftiko lamb, meaning 'thief's roast'.

"For me, the highlight is to sit in a little village in a restaurant, al fresco," Ms Panayi added.

Her comments come as the organisation released research showing that 58 per cent of travellers and expatriates like to eat the food of the country they are in when on holiday, while more than a quarter (26 per cent) allow the cuisine of their potential holiday spot to influence their choice of destination.
