Expatriate Insurance News: Kuwaiti expats 'should not lose financial privileges'

15/04/10 11:37

Filing an absconding case against expatriate workers should not mean that employers have the right to deprive their workers of financial privileges, an expert has said.

Expatriate workers also have the right to contest a case against them should their employer file an absconding claim, the Arab Times quotes a legal adviser from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour as saying.

Kuwait has recently seen a drop in its expatriate workforce due to the global financial situation.

Expats currently make up almost a third (32.1 per cent) of Kuwait's total population of 3.49 million, but official figures show that the expatriate workforce fell for a second consecutive year, dipping from 1.77 million in 2007 to 1.74 million in 2009.

Despite the fall in foreign workforce numbers, the total expatriate population in the country rose last year by 11,000 to 2.37 million, due to the increase in the number of workers' families.
