Expatriate Insurance News: Kuwait 'promises to improve expatriate working conditions'

The Kuwaiti government has pledged to improve working conditions for expatriate employees in the private sector of the Gulf state.
A minimum wage will be introduced for expats after the country faced questions over human rights failures.
Minister for social affairs and labour Mohammed Al-Afasi said earlier this week that the ministry would stop the foreign worker sponsorship convention, which states that all expatriate workers must be sponsored by a local employer to get a work permit.
"The laws and conditions of human rights will be observed in Kuwait," the minister told a press conference.
He added that foreign workers would be offered humane shelter if they have been exposed to violence, abuse or if their rights had not been granted.
Female employees are also set to see their working conditions improve. Mr Al-Afasi said his ministry will "ensure that women workers are not subjected to any form of restrictions while performing their duties".
His comments follow the news that numbers of expatriate workers to the country have been falling since 2008 as a result of the economic crisis.
