Expatriate Insurance News: 'Find friends to reduce culture shock'

22/02/10 18:35

Making local friends is the key to fitting in to a new lifestyle as an expatriate and avoiding culture shock, an expat community website has advised.

Shelter Offshore suggested seeking out other people who have lived abroad when returning home could help expats adjust to a change of scenery and gain perspective.

Keeping busy could also help people deal with the culture shock, the site said.

"This could involve volunteering, or joining a club. Whatever it is, it should be something that you enjoy and that engages you with others, giving you something else to think about and other people to talk to," the site advised.

Expats should also ensure they are covered under medical insurance overseas, as it may take time to adjust to a different country's healthcare system.
