Expatriate Insurance News: Expats 'to shave off beards to raise money for Madeira communities'
26/03/10 12:04
Three expatriates will be shaving off their beards next month to raise money for the people affected by the mudslides in Madeira in February, a report said.
Larry Bawden, who has kept a beard for the last 20 years, Neil Richardson and Chris Wright will be getting rid of their facial hair on the weekend of April 16th and 17th, the Portugal News reported.
The trio, who have been dubbed the Hairy Homens, have set a target of 1,000 euros, which will go towards the relief effort.
Madeira was hit by bad weather last month, which resulted in the deaths of at least 42 people and left up to 800 more homeless.
The expatriate Hairy Homens are keen supporters of Olhanense football club and watched their team play against Maritimo in the island's capital, Funchal, last December. They plan to undergo the sponsored shave when Maritimo play at the Jose Arcanjo Stadium in Olhao.
Mr Richardson told the newspaper: "We had a fantastic time in Madeira and the local people were so friendly. We hope our support will, in some small way, help the community rebuild their lives."
People considering moving to Portugal could think about taking out expatriate health insurance to help cut down costly medical bills.
