Canadian expatriates living in Britain are gearing up for this year's Canada Day, with celebrations set to take place in London's Trafalgar Square on Thursday July 1st.

The day marks Canada's 143rd birthday and will offer expats the opportunity to take part in their home country's sports, culture, food and drink, as well as listen to some Canadian live music from the likes of Jully Black, Sarah Harmer, Eccodek, La Patere Rose and Hawksley Workman.

All visitors are welcome to the free event, which is being hosted in partnership with tour operator Canadian Affair, the Canadian Community in the UK and the mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Kicking off at 10.30am, the celebrations will see celebrities including Paralympian medallist Chantel Petiticlerc and National Hockey League alumnus player Perry Berezan cheering on the return of the Trafalgar Cup street hockey tournament.

James Wright, Canadian high commissioner to the UK, said he was delighted that Canada Day has taken its place in the heart of London for the fifth consecutive year.

"This year is cause for special celebration as the Olympic baton has been passed to London following the successful Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games," he commented, noting that Canada is also hosting the G8 and G20 summits and a visit from the Queen this year.
