Expatriate Insurance News: Expat jailed for murder
12/08/10 17:48
An expatriate has been sentenced to life in jail after being convicted of murdering a disabled woman.
Paul Cryne, 62, was offered £30,000 by Sharon Birchwood's ex-husband, Graham, to fly back from Thailand to Britain and kill the 52-year-old woman, who suffered from ME and walked with a stick.
Mr Birchwood, 54, was also jailed for life last year after being convicted of his ex-wife's murder, which was said to be motivated by his £150,000 worth of debt and the fact that he would receive a £475,000 "pot of gold" from her will.
The two men met through Thailand's expatriate community circles and Mr Cryne had already served jail time in the 1970s.
They hatched an elaborate plan in which the expatriate would kill Mrs Birchwood before leaving the country, allowing Mr Birchwood to travel to his ex-wife's Surrey home and 'discover' the woman's body.
The Old Bailey heard that Mrs Birchwood was last seen alive on December 4th, 2007. Her former husband then alerted the emergency services on December 7th and paramedics arrived at the woman's house to find him calmly standing outside holding a mug of coffee.
Mr Cryne will serve a minimum sentence of 28 years and six months.
