Expatriate Insurance News: Court orders govt to help release jailed expats

24/05/10 10:27

The highest judicial body in Pakistan has ordered the government to set up a committee designed to work towards the release of expatriate nationals jailed in other countries.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan made the move while listening to petitions filed by the Human Rights Commission and others seeking recovery of missing persons.

Justice Javed Iqbal commented that the court will not sit silently until the safety of jailed expatriates is ensured, the South Asian News Agency reported.

Federal secretaries of the foreign affairs, interior and finance ministries told the court of the government's efforts to bring back Pakistani expats jailed abroad.

The court heard that some 6,000 expatriates have been detained in the Middle East, Thailand, Afghanistan and Malaysia, but the foreign ministry explained that their release has been delayed because of a lack of funds.

Three judges sitting in the court directed the government to appoint a liaison official who could complain about Pakistani expatriates held abroad in the hopes of repatriating them.
