Expatriate Healthcare News: Twins 'for sale on website'

20/05/10 14:57

A mother allegedly put her twins up for sale on an expatriate website, it has emerged.

The babies, thought to be around eight months old, were listed on the 'free stuff' page of the Hong Kong-based GeoExpat site, with an asking price of "best offer", Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) reported.

The classified advert including pictures and the description: "Adoption - very handsome beautiful baby boy and girl".

An expatriate woman spotted the advert and alerted Hong Kong police on Wednesday May 19th. By the time the advert was taken down, some 1,200 people had viewed it since it was posted on Sunday 16th.

The expat told the South China Morning Post that she was shocked to have seen the message and had highlighted it to the website's owners.

DPA reported that the disabled mother of the twin babies had posted the advert, saying the pair was in "excellent health condition" and that she wanted to give them a "very lovely" family and home.

The Post reported that the expatriate website removed the message and said it suspected the case was part of a global money-extortion scam.
