Expatriate Healthcare News: Secure homes against thieves

Expatriates and other travellers staying away from their homes for long periods of time are increasingly taking to hiding their valuables in the fight against prospective burglars.
Research by Hiscox revealed how expat and holidaymaking homeowners are taking unusual steps to protect their belongings, such as sewing jewellery into curtains and making their front door look scruffy in an attempt to disguise the true value of the content inside their homes.
However, some methods may backfire on homeowners, the company said, such as when thieves monitoring a house notice that the washing hanging out in the garden has not been taken in for a few days.
Senior risk and valuation advisor Andrew Cheney commented that many homeowners can be creative in their attempts to fool would-be thieves.
However, he explained, it is better to rely on the traditional deterrents such as preventing criminals from accessing the home in the first instance.
"Think of your property with rings of security - from the outer perimeter of your garden and driveway to the inside of your home," Mr Cheney said, adding that there are ways to secure boundaries and driveways followed by the main property and any outbuildings.
"This technique has the effect of wearing an intruder down."
