Expatriate Healthcare News: Saudi embarks on plan to control unemployment

Expatriates living in Saudi Arabia may find that jobs become harder to find as the country sets to work creating employment opportunities in the private sector for its citizens.
According to Emirates Business 24/7, the Ministry of Labour has begun work on a two-year plan to bring unemployment in the kingdom under control, a medium-term programme to reduce the joblessness rate and a long-term scheme to get people back to work.
"The third long-term stage is designed to upgrade the competitiveness of the Saudi economy relying totally on the national human resources," ministry public relations director Fahd bin Saleh Al Khuraisi told the news provider.
Some 160,000 jobs will be created for Saudis in the private sector, while no new provisions have been set out for expatriates.
The Gulf kingdom's expatriate workforce grew by 15 per cent from 5.4 million in 2008 to 6.2 million by the end of 2009, recent figures released by the Ministry of Labour showed.
