International health insurance policyholders living in the UAE will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of the first New Zealand embassy to be opened in the region.

New Zealand foreign minister Murray McCully announced that the embassy is scheduled to be opened in Abu Dhabi next January to help New Zealand expatriates with queries and advice.

"The UAE and New Zealand share a diverse and growing bilateral relationship, and our commercial presence in the UAE is also developing strongly," the minister commented.

The embassy will be able to assist expatriate Kiwis with passport paperwork, authentication of legal documents and passport applications for babies, as well as with other legal and administrative queries.

Mr McCully noted that the presence of the new embassy would drive forward New Zealand's diplomatic status in the Middle East, which could help boost trade.

He pointed out that New Zealand's exports to the Gulf region increased by 122 per cent between 2000 and 2009, making UAE the country's second-largest market among the Gulf states.
