Expatriate Healthcare News: More medical staff needed in UAE

More healthcare staff are needed in the UAE to deal with an ageing and rapidly expanding population, a report by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi has recommended.
The report estimated that the capital would need up to 102 per cent more doctors and 101 per cent more nurses to help care for a population swelled by expatriates and their families, The National reported.
Paediatrics, gynaecology and orthopaedics were the fields that required the highest intake of healthcare staff.
One problem standing in the way of recruitment is the transience of the UAE's expatriate workforce, the report revealed, with 16 per cent of doctors and 13 per cent of nurses leaving their jobs each year.
In order to increase numbers, hospitals will be forced to hire up to a fifth of their workforce each year.
"If churn rates remain at their 2009 level, this will require some 1,600 doctors and almost 1,800 nurses to be recruited annually," the health authority's 2009 report stated.
