Expatriate Healthcare News: Expats 'barred' from Bermuda work-permit consultation meeting

Expats in Bermuda have been excluded from a government consultation on term limits for non-permanent workers, the Bermuda Sun reported.
People going to the consultation meeting on April 8th will have to show proof of Bermudian status on the door, the newspaper said.
Expatriates on work permits in Bermuda have been subject to stringent term limits which have drawn criticism from businesspeople on the island, who say the limits are damaging Bermuda's business industry.
Labour and home affairs minister David Burch called the consultation meeting to discuss the policy and hear feedback from business figures.
In an email seen by the Bermuda Sun, Mr Burch said he wanted to hear from people who think the work permit term limits "signal the death knell" for international business in Bermuda.
"This is not an opportunity to whine, but an opportunity to share relevant information about the industry and so I want to hear from you," he wrote, the paper reported.
"This is a private meeting for Bermudians only - no media - so that there can be an honest sharing of ideas."
Under conditions introduced in 2001, expatriate workers on a six-year term limit are not entitled to a renewal of their permit.
