An expatriate has been convicted of murdering his wife by pushing her off a cliff while holidaying in the Royal National Park near Sydney, Australia.

Former policeman Des Campbell faces life imprisonment after a court found him guilty of killing Janet Campbell, his wife of six months.

The expat had debt problems when he met Janet, who had been left with a substantial amount of money when her first husband died.

Mr Campbell was driven by "sheer greed" when he pushed her off the cliff six days after she moved into the marital home, the court heard. The expat's defence claimed she had tripped and fallen during a visit to the bathroom in the middle of the night in March 2005.

Crown prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC told the New South Wales Supreme Court that Mr Campbell, who described his wife as "pig ugly", was motivated by greed to murder her.

"By the time Janet arrived to live at Otford [the couple's home] ... the accused had got as much money out of her as he could and she was then worth more to him dead than alive," he told the court.

The expatriate did not attend his wife's funeral. He is due to face sentencing on July 23rd.
