An expatriate has been handed a 15-year jail sentence after a court in Dubai found him guilty of murder.

Britain-born Mark Arnold was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, Kerry Winter, with a baseball bat before dumping her body, either at sea or in the desert.

He denied murdering the South African woman, with whom he had a five-year relationship that ended in May 2008, and whose body has never been found.

Clive Stafford Smith, director of legal rights charity Reprieve, expressed concern over the trial processes.

"For a court to convict when there is no body, as happened to Mark Arnold today, is always deeply concerning," he said, adding that the expatriate had been forced to sign a confession written in Arabic, which was used to obtain the conviction.

"The serious irregularities in this investigation clearly breach international fair trials standards," Mr Stafford Smith added, calling on the British government to seek justice for the expat.

Mr Arnold maintains that Ms Winter faked her own death to punish him for ending their relationship.
