Expatriate Healthcare News: Blind expatriate seeks help from Riyadh authorities

An expatriate living in Riyadh who has gone blind as a result of his diabetes has asked the Indian Embassy for help getting him home.
Abubacker Madathil, 45, travelled from Kerala 18 months ago to work as a driver for an imam but he now suffers from retinopathy because of his 13 years of diabetes, Arab News reported.
"Although I came here to work, my sponsor told me there was no work in his house and told me to earn my living by working outside and paying him a monthly allowance," the expatriate told the news provider.
His sponsor still holds his passport and the expat was not given an Iquma, or work permit, the paper said.
Mr Madathil is currently staying with friends and has appealed for help from the Riyadh governor. The New Safa Makkah Clinic has offered to pay for the expatriate's medical plan but a doctor has told him treatment will be cheaper in India.
Expatriates considering moving abroad should be aware that healthcare in many countries could be costly, so taking out an overseas medical plan might be a good idea.
