Expatriate Healthcare News: Beijing tourism 'fuelled by domestic market'

If Beijing is to become known as a tourist destination, it will be largely driven by the domestic market, a travel expert has claimed.

Bob Atkinson of Travelsupermarket.com said if Beijing wishes to attract expatriates and visitors to become the world's most popular tourist destination, "it is going to be driven by the internal market, because obviously they are the most populous nation on earth".

Some 340,000 people are employed directly in tourism in the city, with another 1.7 million individuals indirectly employed in the industry, currently providing hospitality for 167 million travellers.

According to the Beijing Tourism Administration, the city aims to be a globally recognised centre for tourism and is planning to make the industry its biggest.

Mr Atkinson noted that the city is building golf courses "like there is no tomorrow", providing opportunities for golf enthusiasts to come and sample the sport in an unusual setting.

Those thinking of moving to Beijing for business or pleasure could consider taking out expatriate health insurance to help with unexpected medical bills.
