Expatriate Healthcare News: Bahrain healthcare staff 'must respect patient privacy'

Expatriates living in Bahrain with international health insurance could find their privacy rights protected under a new overhaul to the way patients' information is released.
The Bahrain Medical Society (BMS) has announced that all medical staff must know how to deal with ethical issues such as disclosing information to patients' families.
Dr Nada Al Yousuf, head of the BMS Continuous Medical Education Centre, told Gulf Daily News: "Of course, there is no reason or desire not to give information, but there has to be a system. This is being set up now."
She said there was a "somewhat callous" approach towards the issue in the past, but this is now changing.
Workshops designed to raise awareness about patient privacy are being organised for medical staff at the BMS centre in Juffair, the newspaper reported.
An expatriate writing to the Gulf Daily News said he was surprised to find out doctors had informed a colleague of his medical situation without his consent.
"Such a breach in my native England would have got any doctor or member of medical staff into serious trouble," he noted.
