Expat medical insurance news: UAE lifestyle 'making expats fat'
08/12/09 16:30
The overwhelming majority of obese expats living in the UAE feel the lifestyle they pursue in the country is to blame, a new survey has found.
According to the National, 98 per cent of all overweight respondents to the recent study blamed their affliction on lifestyle factors endemic to the UAE.
Speaking to the paper, a number of expats said they had found it difficult to keep trim in the emirates, with many gaining considerable weight since emigrating.
"It is easy to put on weight here, especially since people have to drive to wherever they want to get to, and because there is a culture of big meals in the country," said JD, a 34-year-old investment manager.
Such factors may encourage those considering a move to the UAE to take out an expat life insurance policy in order to ensure access to high-quality healthcare.
The UAE has invested heavily in private health infrastructure in recent years, but affordability may be a concern for potential expats, particularly those who do not have healthcare cover arrangements with their employers.
