Expat medical insurance news: Travel agents 'need to raise health awareness'
03/12/09 12:05
UK travel agents need to do more to alert Britons to the health dangers of visiting exotic locations and the need for vaccinations, Post Office Travel Insurance has claimed.
Comments from the group come after in-house research showed 56 per cent of people were unable to correctly identify holiday hotspots where jabs and preventative medicines are recommended.
Rachel Croft, head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said travel agents could do more to promote the importance of vaccinations at the point of sale.
However, she added that the lack of awareness demonstrated in the study was driven largely by the growth in independent online travel bookings.
"Generally, there is a lack of awareness about this and we would say that people should check out the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice to make sure they do have the necessary vaccinations," she commented.
For Brits considering a permanent move abroad, researching the risks and healthcare services of foreign countries could help to avoid making a claim on an expat medical insurance policy.
