Expat medical insurance news: Kuwait needs to address expat wages

07/01/10 12:30

Kuwait needs to do more to protect expats living in the country to carry out work at the low end of the pay scale, the Kuwait Times has claimed.

Muna Al-Fazai, a staff writer for the paper, wrote that the costs of living in Kuwait are "considerably high" and many foreign workers living in the country are paid a wage that does not accommodate a reasonable standard of living.

He said that despite a widespread awareness of the lack of support available for foreign low-income earners, the issue remains low on the political agenda.

However, he added: "Part of the problem arises mostly owing to some expatriates' ignorance about the country's cost of living. They compare the situation with that of their native country."

The Kuwait Times has also this month reported that the state authorities are pushing ahead with reforms to expat property legislation, although officials have confirmed that while expats who have lived in the country for more than a decade will be able to buy property, they will not be granted full residency status.
