Expat medical insurance news: Healthy lifestyle may ward off cancer risk

17/12/09 12:10

Maintaining an active lifestyle and a balanced diet may help to moderately reduce the risk of cancer recurring, the World Cancer Research Fund has claimed.

Dr Rachel Thompson, the organisation's science programme manager, explained that at present there is little scientific evidence providing guidance on specific methods of reducing the chance of recurrence.

She added that in the absence of strong evidence, "the best approach is to follow the general recommendations for cancer prevention. These include following a healthy diet, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight".

Her comments followed a global report from a team of researchers led by Daniel Mulrooney, assistant professor of paediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Masonic Cancer Center, which showed a higher incidence of cardiovascular complications among adult survivors of childhood and adolescent cancers.

For people living overseas, taking out a robust expat medical insurance policy may provide peace of mind that should they fall ill, they will have full access to treatment.
