Expat medical insurance news: Expat bemoans withdrawal of free healthcare

An expat living in Spain whose access to free healthcare was withdrawn during treatment for breast cancer has made her plight known.
Speaking to the Leader, Elaine Proud, 58, said she and her husband John will struggle to pay the treatment costs now that free cover has been withdrawn. The couple have been living off savings and a small pension in Valencia, she told the paper
The regional authority caused outrage among the expat community when it announced plans to withdraw healthcare for expats under pensionable age who were not working in Spain.
"I know we are luckier than a lot of people – at least we have savings to fall back on. But if we had known that the healthcare was going to be rescinded we would not have come here to live," she commented.
For those planning to move to Spain, it may be worth researching expat medical insurance policies to avoid being left without cover.
