Expat medical insurance news: Dubai faces expat exodus

There will be a steady stream of expats leaving Dubai over the coming months as the emirate struggles to manage its debts, Middle East Online predicts.
The news site reports that while it is unlikely there will be a sharp wave of redundancies, many workers may find it difficult to secure new contracts as the pace of development slows.
Research carried out prior to last year's financial crisis revealed that of a total population of 6.4 million, 5.5 million people living in Dubai are foreigners.
As such, the site predicts that an expat exodus could have a dramatic effect on overall population size. Although many of the departing expats are expected to be manual workers, the news portal reported that many skilled employees are also concerned about their prospects.
According to a report carried out earlier this year by Synovate, the UAE also faces a burgeoning obesity crisis, largely driven by the high number of expats living in the country.
