Expat medical insurance news: Bermuda to introduce expat ID scheme

The Bermudan authorities are pushing ahead with plans to issue all expats living in the country with ID cards.
According to the Royal Gazette, the country's immigration minister David Burch confirmed that the scheme will go ahead in 2010 despite opposition from some quarters.
The ID card initiative was first proposed in November last year in response to growing resentment from local residents who said expats were being offered jobs over domestic workers, even in cases where they had no occupational visas.
Sources known to the paper said that often expat workers are issued a visa to work for one company, but then use the same documentation to work for other firms, often in other industries.
With the competition for jobs hotting up Mr Burch warned that "many guest workers in the construction industry are going to have to go home."
As well as ensuring that working visas are fully valid, those moving to a new country may also do well to ensure they have appropriate expat medical insurance in place to avoid being left without cover in the event of an emergency.
