Expat medical insurance news: Azures offers alternative to Algarve

Portugal's Azures offers an attractive, less well-trodden alternative to the Algarve, according to the country's director of tourism for the region.

Comments from Miguel Cymbron followed research from Trivago which ranked Portgual very highly in terms of Europe's most popular and reputable beach destinations.

For those who are looking to stray from the traditional beachside holiday however, Mr Cymbron said the Azures offers an exciting twist.

"We offer something different, we offer nature. The contact between the land and the sea is very close so you can do whale watching, dolphin watching, diving, walking and hiking," he said.

Such activities may also make the region attractive for retirees planning to move abroad as they will have plenty to do to entertain themselves.

However, it may be worth researching expat medical insurance policies to ensure access to quality healthcare should they be injured during their adventures.

Other destinations to consider could include El Salvador, Germany and Greece, which recently took the top three spots in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2010 survey.
