Expat kickabout becomes national tournament

Expatriate football fans in Israel have banded together to turn their informal kickabout into a full-scale tournament, it has been reported.

According to Israeli news service Haaretz.com, the championship will span five cities in the country, through a five-month season.

British national Daniel Rose told the news source he suggested to his friends that they include teams from Modi'in and Beit Shemesh in a mini-tournament, in addition to existing Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Squads.

Another friend in Ra'anana also wanted to be in on the action, he added, with the event now including a total of five teams.

Mr Rose explained that as most teams will be dominated by British expats, many players living in the tightly-knit community will already know each other.

"I'm personally hoping to cause bodily damage to my brother-in-law and wife's first cousin," he added, reportedly referring to his Beit Shemesh rivals.

Recently published by the United Nations, Israel was ranked 27th out of 182 in the Human Development Index list of the world's most desirable places of residence.
