Expat career changes in Middle East 'offer local opportunities'

Arab employees should be used to replace members of the expatriate community once they move on, says recruitment agent Heidrick & Struggles.

However, with so many people moving on, the situation is creating chances for other, sometimes less experienced expatriates, to get on in their career, says the company.

"This is a great opportunity for many of the younger executives to assume a level of responsibility that would not be available to them in their home countries," says Jon Boyle, partner in the Industrial practice in Dubai.

Instead of a first wave of expatriates working for firms and passing on their knowledge, many opted to stay or were themselves later replaced with another expatriate.

Firms need to work on their retention schemes, advises partner Paul Benson.

Each of the countries in the region have slightly different health services - overseas insurance could help expatriates should they need to use it.
