Expat Medical Insurance News: Visa rules put Saudi Arabia out of reach for expats

A growing number of expat workers have experienced visa problems in Saudi Arabia in recent months, and deceptive recruitment strategies may be to blame, it has been claimed.

According to Arab News, many Saudi employers choose to list their expat workers as labourers on their visa application to avoid the difficulty of circumventing the Saudization programme, which reserves many skilled jobs for nationals.

"That takes a lot of time. So people basically prefer to take the shorter route and come here on these low-category visas where you don't have to produce anything," said Majed Hussain, a planning engineer based in Jubail.

But while this makes it easier for the worker to enter the country, their residency may be subject to a number of restrictions, such as the inability to bring one's family to live in the country.

For those planning a move to Saudi Arabia, it may be worth discussing expat medical insurance policies with a potential employer, as Expat Blog reports that access to free healthcare may be limited.
