Expat Medical Insurance News: UAE lifestyle promotes obesity

20/01/10 12:40

Although many expats arrive in the UAE in good shape, the country's lifestyle often leads to the development of obesity, according to one senior medical official.

Speaking to Trade Arabia, Dr Mark Newson-Smith, chief medical officer of Emirates National Oil Company, said that recent research has shown that among Indian workers, who constitute 42 per cent of UAE's total expat population, obesity levels rose from two per cent to seven per cent after finding employment in the country.

"When workers arrive into the UAE their obesity levels are far lower [than] after they have been here for a period of time. So what are we doing to them? [...]There is something socially and culturally which is impacting everyone," he added.

Those planning a move to the UAE may wish to take out an expat medical insurance policy to ensure full access to healthcare facilities in the event of accident or illness.

The country has invested heavily in healthcare in recent years, although access to public facilities may be limited.
