Expat Medical Insurance News: Language barrier remains a problem in Korea

Although South Korea is establishing itself as a major player in the regional and global economy, many expats working in the country still experience problems due to a language barrier, according to the Korea Times.
Speaking to the paper on condition of anonymity, a European ambassador working in the country said he often encounters difficulty buying goods and services online because Korean websites do not support ID-authentication for foreigners.
"I tried to make reservations for the movie 'Avatar' last weekend. But I couldn't make them because I don't have a resident registration number or social security number. We have a foreigners' number, but it is nothing," said the diplomat.
Meanwhile, Joanna Encabo, a Filipino who has lived in the country for six years, said she could not carry out basic banking transactions without help from a friend who speaks Korean.
For those who are considering moving to the country, Expat Focus has reported that most doctors speak at least some English, while larger hospitals in major cities will be able to provide support for people with no knowledge of Korean.
