05/03/10 13:00

The Haitian minister for Haitians living abroad Edwin Paraison has called on the country's expat diaspora to help the country rebuild after the catastrophic earthquake that struck the capital on January 12th.

CBC News reports that Mr Paraison urged his fellow countrymen living overseas to show their support for the 1.5 million people who have been displaced by the seven-magnitude quake.

"Haiti is calling on its sons and daughters spread out across the world to ... lend us a helping hand … with their technical expertise," the minister said yesterday (March 5th) during a conference which is taking place at the University of Montreal's engineering school, the École Polytechnique.

Haiti's prime minister Jean-Max Bellerive was also in attendance at the two-day conference, which was organised by Jean-Marie Bourjolly, management professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal.
