Expat Medical Insurance News: Expats free to volunteer in South Korea

21/01/10 13:15

Despite widespread belief to the contrary, expats living in South Korea are free to carry out volunteer work in the country.

Speaking to the Korea Herald, Baek Joo-Hwan, the executive director of Helping Others Prosper through English (Hope), said that many expats have been put off volunteering because of rumours and speculations about the illegality of doing so.

However, after much investigation, Baek is helping to spread the word that it is not only legal, but there is also financial support available for those who choose to do so, with reimbursement available to cover costs of travel and food.

Since he set up his not-for-profit organisation in March 2008, Baek has managed to recruit 27 expat volunteers to help teach English to underprivileged children and he has further ambitions to set up a permanent free English school to further serve communities in and around Seoul.

The ability to engage in such extra-occupational activities may help expats new to the country to integrate more fully, while also providing a sense of reward.

For those planning a move to the country, Expat Focus reports that its heavily subsidized healthcare infrastructure is considerably cheaper than in other industrialised nations such as the US.
