Expat Medical Insurance News: Expats experience employment difficulties in Bahrain

09/02/10 13:00

Many Bangladeshi expats living in Bahrain are being exploited by their employers, it has emerged.

Speaking to Gulf Daily News during an open house event held at the Bangladesh embassy, officials declared that the main concern is that employers are holding on to workers' passports and employment documents, preventing them from finding a new employer.

Meanwhile, a number of employers are also flouting the law by refusing to pay wages directly into employees' bank accounts, while some are reneging on their payment duties altogether.

"Many recruitment agencies or so-called brokers also break promises made to people back home and thus getting them trapped here," said ambassador Mohammed Ali Akbar.

However, he added that the embassy is receiving support from Bahraini employment agencies to tackle the issues, which were attributed to "a small minority of unscrupulous people".

In addition to sounding out employment legislation thoroughly, researching expat healthcare insurance may also be a key part of preparing for a move abroad.

Late last year, Bahrain was placed fifth in the HSBC Expat Experience survey after scoring highly in criteria such as integration, access to education and medical facilities.
