Living in a different culture provides stimulus for the brain and expands people's horizons, one former expat has claimed.
Writing for China Daily, Helen Zhang, who formerly lived in Australia but has now returned to Beijing, explained that the expat experience encourages foreigners to appreciate cultural differences.
"Research has found that living an expatriate life stretches our brain. It stimulates creative ideas and also makes life more interesting, as we see new images, new people and have new experiences," she claimed.
Her comments followed a conversation she had had with an expat living in China's capital who revealed that since he had moved overseas, he had come to adopt many of the local customs, although he felt not all of them were positive.
Medi Broker has advised those planning a move to China that it is important to get to grips with the country's healthcare system, which has seen dramatic improvements in recent years, particularly in aspects such as expat medical insurance provision.
