A representative of Iraq's high electoral commission is visiting Australia to remind the country's 40,000-strong Iraqi expat community to exercise their right to vote in the troubled country's upcoming regional elections.

ABC.net.au reports that Bassim Al-Jabre is making last-minute preparations to ensure that Iraqis are able to vote on election day, with a total of eight polling centres set to operate in Sydney, Melbourne, Shepparton in regional Victoria, Brisbane and Perth.

Speaking to the news resource through an interpreter, he said that Iraqis will not need to pre-register, as the facilities will be able to complete registration on the day.

"We have been given lots of options for these people who are voting to show their identity as original Iraqi-born people," he said, adding that the commission is also taking measures to accommodate those who do not have full identity documentation.

Improving stability and supporting reconstruction is likely to be a key issue on the electoral agenda, as well as traditional concerns such as healthcare, education, defence and transport policy.ADNFCR-1788-ID-19639210-ADNFCR
