Expat Health Insurance News: Nigerian oil law 'could force out expatriate workers'

Expatriates working in Nigeria's energy sector could be forced out of their jobs after legislation was passed requiring the country's oil and gas industry operators to replace foreign workers with Nigerians.
Companies have four years to change expatriates for local workers under the new Nigerian content act, news website 234next.com reported.
All operators in the industry are expected to put forward a training and employment programme that would help Nigerians get jobs in the sector.
The act, signed by acting president Goodluck Jonathan, will guarantee the long-term survival of the oil and gas industry, minister of petroleum resources Diezani Alison-Maduake is quoted as saying by the news site.
In a bid to force more money from the sector into Nigeria's economy, Ms Alison-Maduake said the legislation will help the $18 billion average annual spending in the oil and gas industry be domiciled in the country.
Under the law, Nigerian independent operators will be given first consideration for most oil-based contracts from now on.
